With Facebook being in the news recently due to security leaks, it seems like a good idea yet again to talk about internet security. Please talk with your kids and find out what apps they are running on their phones. We can’t count how many calls are being reported that involve some level of involvement with Facebook, Snapchat, or a variety of others.
We had a recent post in which a young woman was featured for saving a life of a friend who posted images of a handful of pills that she was going to take. Fortunately we were able to make contact with the young woman in crisis, and disaster was averted, but it is important that if your kids are seeing stuff like this that they tell you.
We know that there are internet bullies “keyboard commandos,” out there. Their trolling, isn’t always a huge deal, but we want to make sure that the kids know that people are not always who you think they are on the internet.
Many predators are out there, and they can pose as young kids just as easily as kids pretending to be older. It is also a good reminder to let them know that anyone soliciting images of them nude is technically soliciting child pornography, and we treat it as such. Even kids who are doing this in a “consensual ” manner can get themselves into trouble, and we want to avoid all of that!
The lesson to share with your kids is don’t share anything on the internet that you wouldn’t want your entire school to see.
Please be safe out there, we want you all to enjoy the internet (we obviously use it), but you need to be careful.
Be safe and be vigilant
