Father Shoots His 5 year Old Son In The Head Killing Him, Then Kills Self
“Father Murders 5 Year Old Son and then Commits Suicide”
Dixon Police Officers and Lee County Sheriff’s Deputies are currently investigating an apparent murder – suicide. Dixon Police were contacted at approximately 3:37 p.m. to 1014 Fargo Avenue, Dixon for reports of “shots fired.” Dixon Patrol Officers, Detectives, and Lee County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives arrived at the scene within minutes of the call. Due to exigent circumstances, the decision was made to make entry into the residence. Officers worked their way to the 2 nd floor of the residence and found a door barricaded shut. Officers forced entry to the room and immediately found 5 year old
Christopher Michaels deceased from a gunshot wound to the head. Officers also found Christopher’s dad, Robert Michaels, with a gunshot wound to his head. Robert had a semi-automatic handgun lying next to his hand on the floor. He was breathing, but unresponsive.
Officers called for Dixon City Fire, who were already staged less than a block away. Robert was transported to KSB Hospital where he was later flown to a Rockford Hospital. Robert Michaels has been pronounced dead.
Chief Langloss released this statement, “Our heart goes out to the family members who have suffered this horrific tragedy. Our officers feel your pain. There is nothing more difficult for a police officer than seeing a young child’s life being taken in such a senseless manner. This is by far the worst situation our officers have been involved in.”
Robert Michaels has been under investigation by the Dixon Police Department since September 12 th for allegations of child sexual abuse. The reported victim of the abuse was not his son, Christopher Michaels. Dixon Police were working with Shining Star Children’s Advocacy Center and the Multi-Disciplinary Child Protection Team, which included the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). DCFS
had created a safety plan that prohibited Robert Michaels from having contact with Christopher.
During the investigation, officers learned that Christopher and his mother had gone to his dad’s residence, located at 1014 Fargo Avenue, this afternoon shortly before the incident occurred. Robert asked Christopher if he wanted to play a video game and they went upstairs. Christopher’s mother went
upstairs as well. Robert asked Christopher’s mother to go grab something for them. When she walked away from the door, Robert immediately slammed the door shut and barricaded the door. Almost immediately, but before police were called, Christopher’s mother heard 2 gun shots. She exited the house
to get her cell phone and called the police.
Christopher Michaels attended kindergarten at St. Anne’s in Dixon. Dixon Police have been in contact with the school administration.
This matter remains under investigation. The Department is being assisted by the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations Unit
