On Thursday, August 3, 2017, shortly after 11:00 p.m. patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to the Circle K, 3819 Broadway, in reference to an attempted robbery. When they arrived officers learned that a black male suspect had entered the business and implied that he had a weapon. The suspect jumped over the counter and demanded money from the clerk. When the clerk refused to open the cash register the suspect fled the scene without obtaining any currency. The suspect was seen leaving the scene in a light-colored SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Trailblazer.
On Friday morning, August 4, 2017, shortly before 3:00 a.m. patrol officers responded to the CVS Pharmacy, 110 South Alpine Road, in reference to an armed robbery. When they arrived officers learned that a black male suspect, closely matching the description of the suspect from the earlier incident at the Circle K, had entered the business while armed with a knife. The suspect demanded money from a clerk and fled after obtaining an undisclosed amount of currency. The suspect was seen leaving the scene in a light-colored SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Trailblazer.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit conducted a follow-up investigation into both of these incidents and were able to identify a suspect, 47-year-old Steven Hanserd. On Friday, August 4, 2017, Hanserd was arrested on unrelated charges and lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. The suspect vehicle used in the incidents was also located and impounded.
The investigation was later reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result, additional charges were authorized and warrants were obtained for Hanserd’s involvement in the incidents at the Circle K and CVS Pharmacy. A photo of Hanserd is attached.

The charges against Hanserd are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases Hanserd is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.

On 8/4/17 shortly before 3:00 A.M. Rockford Police responded to the CVS, 110 S. Alpine Rd for an Armed Robbery. One suspect entered the store yielding a knife. The suspect approached the clerk and demanded money. The suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect fled south on Alpine Rd in a gray SUV.
No injuries were reported during this incident.
The suspect was described as a black male around 40 years old. He was 6’1″ and 250 lbs. Wearing a gray shirt.
