On Thursday, August 10, 2017 at approximately 9:32 a.m., a Rockford Police Department officer was on patrol in the 1000 block of School Street when he encountered a suspicious subject. As the officer began to approach, the subject fled on foot. A brief pursuit ensued and additional officers responded to the scene. The subject, later identified as 29-year-old Nicholas Falls of Rockford, surrendered shortly thereafter and was taken into custody without incident.
Upon further investigation, officers learned Falls had discarded a gun during the pursuit. The gun was recovered and had been previously reported stolen in a burglary. Falls is a convicted felon and also is currently on parole with the Illinois Department of Corrections. The results of the investigation involving Falls were reviewed with the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office who authorized the following charges against Falls: unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and possession of a stolen gun. Falls was also wanted on a failure to appear warrant and a parole violation warrant.
Falls was transported to the Winnebago County Jail and lodged.
The charges against Falls are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
