On Saturday, August 12th at about 2:45 AM, a shooting occurred in the area of 8th St and Euclid Ave in the City of Beloit. A Beloit Police Sergeant and Officer were within a few blocks of the area patrolling on foot and heard numerous shots fired. Witnesses provided a description of a vehicle that was believed to be involved in the shooting, and the Beloit Police Department spotted the suspect vehicle in the area of 4th and Portland where a stop of the vehicle was attempted. The suspect vehicle subsequently fled and the police pursued.
Stop sticks were employed and the suspect vehicle did engage the stops sticks causing the tires to begin to deflate. The suspect vehicle attempted to take the north I-39/90 on-ramp from Milwaukee Rd, but lost control of the vehicle by excessive speed and the deflation of the tires through the curve and went into the field area separating the North I-39 ramp and the ramp going to West I-43. The vehicle was then able to get onto the ramp for West I-43. The suspect vehicle went about a quarter of a mile before the suspects fled from the vehicle on foot. At this time the suspects have not been apprehended as they had fled into a heavily wooded area.
A 29 year old male from Beloit received one gunshot wound to the buttocks and is expected to survive and a 19 year old female from Rockford received a gunshot wound to the head and according to medical personnel is critical, but should survive.
Right now the investigation revealed that a disturbance likely led into an altercation, which then led to multiple shots being fired. It also appears that there were multiple shooters resulting in the two individuals being struck.
A citizen did report locating a firearm that was located near a sidewalk where the suspect vehicle pursuit was initiated and the police have recovered and are examining the firearm. The Beloit Police Department does have viable leads on this investigation; however, as this is in the early stage of the investigation, suspect information cannot be released. The Beloit Police Department is also seeking assistance from the community on any information on this investigation.
