On Monday, August 21, 2017 at approximately 6:30 p.m., patrol officers and detectives from the Rockford Police Department responded to the 500 block of Island Avenue in reference to an aggravated assault investigation. When they arrived officers learned that the incident began as a traffic dispute between the drivers of two different vehicles. During the dispute the driver of one vehicle pointed a handgun at the driver of another vehicle and fired one round into the air. The suspect then intentionally rammed the victim’s vehicle with his own vehicle. The suspect was later located near the intersection of 16th Avenue and 9th Street and was taken into custody without incident. No one was injured during the incident and the handgun was not recovered.
The incident was later reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result the suspect, 30-year-old Joshua Murphy, was charged with the listed offenses. Murphy was later lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.
ARRESTED: Joshua Murphy, 30-years-old, Rockford, IL
CHARGES: Aggravated Assault with a Firearm
Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Motor Vehicle)
Criminal Damage to Vehicle
The charges against Murphy are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases Murphy is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
