On Sunday, July 16, 2017 at about 1:30 p.m. patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to the 2000 block of Dresden Avenue in reference to an attempted robbery. When they arrived officers learned that the 83-year-old victim was outside near her vehicle when she was approached by three suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun and threatened the victim. The suspects then attempted, unsuccessfully, to pull the victim’s purse away from her. The victim began screaming for help and the suspects fled the area on foot.
A short time later officers located the three suspects walking on Halstead Road. Two of the suspects were taken into custody and the third fled on foot. A K-9 was used to track the suspect with negative results. A B.B. gun that is believed to have been used in the incident was recovered.
Detectives from the Rockford Police Department conducted a follow-up investigation into the incident which was reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result, charges were authorized against two of the suspects, 18-year old Joshua Mittlestaedt and 18-year-old Darius Barker. Both suspects were arrested on the following charges and lodged in the Winnebago County Jail.
ARRESTED: Joshua Mittlestaedt, 18-years old, Rockford, IL
Darius Barker, 18-years old, Rockford, IL
CHARGES: Attempted Aggravated Robbery
Attempted Robbery (Victim over the age of 60)
This is an ongoing investigation.
The charges against both suspects are merely accusations and not evidence of their guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases they are considered innocent unless proven guilt in court.
