On Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at about 10:30 p.m. patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to an apartment in the 2300 block of River Oaks Lane in reference to a Home Invasion that had just occurred. When they arrived officers learned that multiple suspects had forced their way into the residence and had robbed the occupants at gunpoint. The suspects then fled the scene after taking undisclosed items from the victims.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit conducted a follow-up investigation into the incident. The results of the investigation were reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result charges were authorized and a warrant was obtained for one of the suspects, 19 year old Antonio Cruz, for Violation of the Cannabis Control Act.
On Thursday, June 1, 2017 shortly after midnight officers located and arrested Antonio Cruz in the 3100 block of Prial Avenue. At that time officers also located a second suspect from the Home Invasion, later identified as 19-year-old Javaris Lewis. Both Cruz and Lewis were later lodged in the Winnebago County Jail where they are being held in lieu of bond.
The charges against both Cruz and Lewis are merely accusations and not evidence of their guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases Cruz and Lewis are considered innocent unless proven guilty in court
