Rockford Scanner fan Jose (He was the home owner and shooting victim) contacted us and said his house was being burglarized when he came home. He fought with one of the suspects, when the other suspect shot him in the back.
On Wednesday, June 14, 2017 shortly after 9:30 p.m. patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to a local hospital in reference to a shooting victim. The victim, 28-year-old Jose Heras of Rockford, was suffering from a single gunshot wound to his back. The victim claimed that he had been at his residence in the 1200 block of 14th Street when he was confronted by an unknown black male suspect. The suspect then allegedly fired an unknown handgun at the victim, striking him in the back. The victim was then transported to the hospital by his brother, later identified as 26-year-old Diego Heras. Jose Heras was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.
While conducting the on-scene investigation officers located the vehicle that Diego Heras had been driving. A shotgun and ammunition were recovered from the vehicle. Based on the information available at this time it is unknown whether or not the shotgun and ammunition played a role in the incident.
The results of the investigation were reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result charges were authorized against Diego Heras. He was later lodged in the Winnebago County Jail where he is being held in lieu of bond.

The charges against Diego Heras are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases Diego Heras is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Officers responded to a local hospital for a shooting victim to find a male shot one time in the back. The victim stated he was walking in the 1200 block of 14th St when he was followed by two black males. As they approached him they shot him one time in the back. The victim fled on foot to his residence where he called for help. The suspects fled in an unknown direction. The victim had no further suspect description. The suspects did not take anything from the victim, nor did they say anything to him. The victim is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
