On Wednesday, March 29, 2017, shortly before 4:00 p.m., patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to the 800 block of Fitch Road in reference to an armed robbery to a citizen. When they arrived officers learned that three victims had been confronted by a suspect who was armed with a handgun. The suspect demanded money from the victims and then fled the scene after obtaining an undisclosed amount of currency.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit conducted a follow-up investigation into the incident and were able to identify a possible suspect. The results of the investigation were reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. Charges were authorized and a warrant was issued for the suspect, Tyrone Smith, for armed robbery. Smith was also wanted on warrants for other unrelated incidents.
On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Tyrone Smith was taken into custody by the St. Louis, Missouri Police Department. Smith is currently in custody in St. Louis on local charges pending extradition. A photo of Smith is attached.

The charges against Smith are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases he is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
