On Friday November 11, 2016 shortly before 7:00 p.m., patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to the area of North Rockton Avenue and Bruce Street in reference to a shooting incident. When they arrived officers located two victims: a 14-year-old male, later identified as Jamario Crawford, who was deceased; and a 17-year-old male, later identified as Lontrell Brantley, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Brantley was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives from the Rockford Police Department conducted a follow-up investigation into the incident and the results were reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result, First Degree Murder charges were authorized and a warrant was issued for the 15-year-old suspect, Coley Carwell.
On April 7, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. members of the Rockford Police Department Detective Bureau, Rockford Police Department SCOPE Unit, members of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit, and Winnebago County Sheriff’s TAC Team arrested Coley Carwell in the 1300 Block of North Main Street.
ARRESTED: Coley Carwell 16-years-old, Rockford, Ill.
CHARGES: First Degree Murder
BOND: $3 Million
Carwell was lodged in the Winnebago County Juvenile Detention Center. Carwell’s photo is not available at this time due to his age.
Rockford Scanner reporting the following: About 7 ish I heard a crash at the Mobil gas station on N Main and then saw 2 cars by the pumps that crashed. Then an undercover cop with his gun drawn running through the parking lot. About 30 seconds later there were like 20 cops on scene.
