On Monday, April 24, 2017 shortly after 7:00 p.m. patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to the 2700 block of Bildahl Street in reference to a disorderly conduct incident. When they arrived officers located two suspects, a 17-year-old male and a 14-year-old male, attempting to break into a detached garage. Both suspects attempted to flee on foot and a foot chase ensued. The 14-year-old male was taken into custody immediately. A K-9 unit was called to track the 17-year-old suspect who was later located and also taken into custody.
Upon further investigation it was learned that prior to attempting to break into the garage the two suspects had confronted four juvenile victims. The suspects were armed with a bicycle chain, which they were using as a weapon, and demanded the victims’ cell phones. The suspects then battered all four of the victims and briefly took a cell phone from one of the victims. The cell phone was then returned to the victim.
Detectives from the Rockford Police Department conducted a follow-up investigation into the incident. The results of the investigation were reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result both suspects were arrested and charged with the following:
ARRESTED: 17-year-old Juvenile Male
14-year-old Juvenile Male
CHARGES: Armed Robbery
Attempted Armed Robbery (3 counts)
Battery (4 counts)
Criminal Trespass to Property
Criminal Damage to Property (2 counts)
Both suspects were lodged in the Winnebago County Juvenile Detention Center. Due to their age, the names and photos of the suspects cannot be released.
The charges against both suspects are merely accusations and not evidence of their guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases they are considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
