On Saturday, March 4, 2017, at about 6:00 p.m., members of the Rockford Police Department Rockford Housing Authority Unit were patrolling the area of Fairgrounds Housing Development when they observed a vehicle north bound on Avon Street. As they watched the vehicle, which was occupied by four subjects, officers observed an unknown object thrown from the passenger side window. A check of the vehicle’s license plate revealed that it was registered to a different vehicle.
Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of North Independence Avenue and Fairview Avenue. As officers approached the vehicle it appeared as though the occupants were attempting to conceal something inside the passenger compartment. A K9 unit responded to the scene and a search of the vehicle was subsequently conducted. The search revealed an amount of cannabis and a handgun inside the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with the following:
ARRESTED: Paul Thompson 44 years old Rockford, IL
CHARGES: Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons
Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Felon
No Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID)
The other three occupants of the vehicle were released without charge. The object that was originally thrown from the vehicle was never located.
The charges against Thompson are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases he is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
