Update from the Winnebago County Coroners office:
The autopsy showed the child died from drowning. Pending further studies
This morning around 4 am this morning several emergency personnel were dispatched to the 1600 block of E State st. for a 1 year old child that was not breathing. Initial reports said they were giving their child a bath around 4am in the morning, when the child somehow drowned. They were not able to revive the child. Officials are calling this a death investigation.
On Sunday, March 5, 2017, at about 4:00 a.m. officers from the Rockford Police Department and personnel from the Rockford Fire Department responded to a residence in the 1600 block of East State Street in reference to an infant who was not breathing. When they arrived they located the victim, a 1 year old female, who was not breathing. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Detectives from the Rockford Police Department Violent Crimes Unit and Sensitive Crimes Unit are conducting a follow-up investigation into this incident. At this time the victim’s death is considered to be suspicious. Three other children in the home were taken into protective custody.
At this time the name of the victim is not being released due to the nature of the investigation. Further information will be released pending the outcome of an autopsy.
