On February 24, 2017 at about 10:50 a.m. Rockford Police patrol officers responded to Crusader Community Health, 1100 Broadway, regarding a report of an altercation with two suspects possibly armed with handguns. Officers arrived and met with the two victims who reported they were confronted by two black male suspects who said they were armed with guns. Officers were able to locate and detain the two suspects. Officers also located the suspect’s vehicle parked nearby. A check of the vehicle revealed two loaded handguns.
Members of the Rockford Police Department Violent Crime Unit and Rockford Police Department Gang Unit conducted a follow-up investigation. The results of the investigation were reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office who authorized the following charges for:
ARRESTED: Clevon A. Jones, B/M, Age: 20, Rockford, Ill.
CHARGES: No Firearm Owner’s Identification
Unlawful Use of Weapons By a Felon
Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Street Gang Member
Violation of the Cannabis Control Act Possession
ARRESTED: Joseph Q. Smith, B/M, Age: 21, Rockford, Ill.
CHARGES: Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon
No Firearm Owner’s Identification
Theft (Possession of Stolen Property)
Both subjects were lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. No further information is available at this time. Additional information may be released at it becomes available.
The charges against Jones and Smith are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
