On Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at approximately 8:36 p.m., members of the Rockford Police Department SCOPE team conducted a traffic stop in the 900 block of 17th Street. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 18-year-old Donovan Ashford, did not have a valid driver’s license. SCOPE officers smelled the odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle and conducted a search. Ashford was found to be in possession of a quantity of cannabis and United States currency. A passenger, 18-year-old Antoinette Box-Carmichael, was the registered owner of the vehicle and found to be in possession of a loaded handgun.
Ashford was issued citations for Failure to Signal When Required, No Valid Driver’s License, and Possession of Cannabis (2.5 to 10 grams).
Box-Carmichael was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons and No Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID).
There were two other passengers in the vehicle who were released without charges.
Box-Carmichael was lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. Her photo is attached. No photo is available of Ashford at this time.
