On February 14, 2017 at about 11:45 p.m., Rockford SCOPE officers were on patrol in the area of North Rockton Avenue and Cameron Avenue when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2001 Audi that had fled from Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police earlier that day. The driver failed to stop. As the driver reached the 900 block of North Court Street, he exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers were able to apprehend him in the 900 block of Ridge Avenue. He was identified as 19-year-old Rockford resident, Michael Mallett. Mallett was found to be on parole.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police K-9 unit was contacted and conducted an article search. A handgun was located along the path of flight. The gun had been reported stolen. Officers searched the interior of the Audi and located a quantity of heroin and marijuana.
Mallett was charged with the following offenses: Armed Violence, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, Possession of Stolen Firearm, Possession with intent to Deliver Cannabis, Possession of Heroin, Resisting, No FOID, Fleeing to Elude, No Valid Driver’s License, No Front Registration.
Mallett was transported to the Winnebago County Jail and lodged.
The charges against Mallet are merely accusations. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
