On May 12, 2016, 32-year-old East Dundee resident Matthew Shores was arrested in Fox Lake, Ill. after he was found to be in possession of a firearm in that jurisdiction. Shores was charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon and lodged in Lake County Jail.
On May 15, 2016, Rockford Police were sent to an address in the 1700 block of Douglas Street in reference to a residential burglary complaint. The homeowner advised that sometime between May 8 – May 15, 2016, his residence had been burglarized. Several firearms were among the items allegedly taken from the residence. A preliminary investigation by Rockford Police revealed that the firearm found in Shores’ possession in Fox Lake was one of the firearms taken in the burglary in Rockford.
The ATF task force conducted an investigation. As a result of this investigation, the case was reviewed with the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. On February 1, 2017, the case was presented to the Winnebago County Grand Jury who returned a bill of indictment charging Shores with the following offenses:
Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon (four counts)
Shores is currently in custody in the Department of Corrections, serving a five year sentence for Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, stemming from the Fox Lake arrest.

The charges against Shores are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases, he is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
