Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato, Chief of the Criminal Bureau Marilyn Hite Ross and Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea announce charges for a murder in Rockford in December of 2016.
Rockford Police Officers were called to the area of 10th Street and 6th Avenue in the early morning hours of December 22nd, 2016, for a man that appeared to not be breathing. Police and Rockford Firefighters located the victim, Brian Abbott (D.O.B. 8/6/1995) of Racine, Wisconsin who was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy found Abbott died as a result of multiple puncture wounds to his body.
The suspect was indicted by a Winnebago County Grand Jury on 10 counts of First Degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Battery and one count of Unlawful Restraint.
First Degree Murder is a Class M Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 20-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release.
Aggravated Battery is a Class 3 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 2-5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by a year of Mandatory Supervised Release.
Unlawful Restraint is a Class 4 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 1-3 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by a year of Mandatory Supervised Release.
The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Rockford Police have released the name of the man found dead Thursday morning.
Authorities say 21-year-old Brian Thomas Abbott, of Racine, Wisconsin, was found dead with multiple stab wounds around 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning in the 1400 block of 6th Avenue.
Police are continuing to investigate this case as a homicide. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact police.
On Thursday, December 22, 2016 at approximately 5:34 a.m., Rockford Police officers responded to the intersection of 10th Street and 6th Avenue in reference to a report of a male subject lying on the ground not breathing. Upon arrival, officers located a white male, approximately 20-30 years old, deceased on 6th Avenue near 10th Street.
Rockford Police detectives are investigating the incident as an active death investigation with suspicious circumstances.

There is no further information available at this time.
