ARREST / STOLEN VEHICLE RECOVERY
On 12/22/2016 at about 7pm, members of the Rockford Specialized Community Oriented Police Enforcement team were patrolling in the 1200 block of Island Avenue when they observed three subjects entering a silver Ford Freestyle. This vehicle had been reported stolen on 12/16/2016. It was taken from the 1900 block of Freemont Avenue. Officers attempted to stop the subjects but they were able to enter the vehicle. The driver, along with one of the passengers, was able to start the vehicle and fled west bound in the 1200 block of Island Avenue. A third passenger attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a short foot chase. The suspect was identified as a fifteen year old male. He was later charged with Criminal Trespass to Vehicle and Resisting arrest. He was lodged in the Juvenile Detention Center.
Shortly after the occupants of the stolen Ford Freestyle fled the scene, a Rockford Park District officer observed the vehicle sideswipe a Chevy Malibu, northbound in the 500 block of South Central Avenue. A twenty three year old female and her seven month old child were in the Chevy as it was struck. Neither suffered any injuries as a result of the accident.
Upon further investigation, officers recovered a Pontiac Torrent in the 1200 block of Island Avenue. The vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day (12/22/2016) from the 3300 block of Hanover Street. Both the Pontiac and the Ford had been left running and unoccupied when they were stolen.
These are active investigations at this time. No further information is available.
The charges against the fifteen year old male are merely accusations. He is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
