On Thursday December 8, 2016 shortly after 7:00 a.m. patrol officers from the Rockford Police Department responded to a residence in the 3200 block of Parkside Avenue in reference to a stabbing. When they arrived officers located the victim, a 48 year old female, suffering from minor stab wounds to the hands and other blunt force trauma to her head. Officers learned that the suspect, who was the victim’s ex-boyfriend, had approached the victim in the driveway and attempted to stab her with a utility knife or box cutter. When the victim attempted to flee the suspect began battering her. A male friend of the victim, 53 year old Paul Gordon, attempted to intervene and struggled with the suspect. Gordon was also cut by the utility knife during the struggle.
The suspect, later identified as 49 year old Lemuel Mitchell, attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was located and taken into custody after a brief foot chase. Mitchell was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries that he received during the struggle with Gordon. Mitchell was later lodged in the Winnebago County Jail on the following charges:
ARRESTED: Lemuel Mitchell 49 years old Rockford, IL
CHARGES: Aggravated Battery with a Knife
Winnebago County Warrant
A photo of Mitchell is attached electronically to this press release. The name of the female victim is not being released due to the domestic nature of the incident.
The charges against Mitchell are merely accusations and not evidence of his guilt. As with defendants in all criminal cases Mitchell is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.
