On Monday, October 17, at about 4:50 PM, officers were dispatched to an accident on N. 2nd St., at Cherry Place, just south of River Lane, where a northbound brown van had been struck from behind, by a northbound truck.
Paramedics from Metro Ambulance, the first ambulance to arrive, triaged the scene, so that AMR, Lifeline, Harlem Roscoe & Rockford Fire Department Ambulances could transport six injured occupants of the van to a local hospital. Those transported included children, 6, 10, 11 & 14 years of age.
The driver of the truck, Gerald W. Laurente (69) of Stillman Valley was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident & driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The driver of the van, Latoya D. Holloway (29) of Rockford was charged with operation of uninsured motor vehicle, illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor & failure to properly secure a child under the age of eight.
A passenger of the van, Thaddios R. H. Winfield (35) of Rockford was charged with illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor & failure to wear a seat belt.
The charges are merely allegations & defendants are considered innocent, unless proven guilty in a Court of Law.
