JUAN C. ESPARZA, 28 years old of Belvidere, Illinois, was charged with two counts of Aggravated, great bodily harm (class 3 felony). Esparza remains in the Boone County Jail with no bond.
On Monday, October 3, 2016, the Belvidere Patrol Officers responded to a medical call for a person stabbed in the 500 block of E. Hurlbut Street. Upon arrival with Boone County Sheriff’s Deputies, Lifeline Ambulance, and Belvidere Fire Department, patrol officers made contact with a 23 year old male who had been stabbed multiple times in the torso. The male was transported to OSF St. Anthony Hospital for medical treatment.
The alleged offender, Juan Esparza, is a documented Latin King Gang member and was reported to have gone back into the residence. Esparza initially refused to comply with commands by patrol to come out and after approximately an hour Esparza and multiple other subjects exited the residence and were taken into custody without incident.
Belvidere Detective’s along with members of the Belvidere Gang Intervention Unit executed a search warrant for the residence where evidence was seized. Belvidere Detective’s conducted numerous interviews and reviewed the investigation with the Boone County State’s Attorney’s Office. After review, two (2) counts of Aggravated Battery were authorized for Esparza. A class three (3) felony is punishable by 2-5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The 23 year old male remains in stable condition under medical supervision. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are possible.
Just before 9 pm tonight several emergency personnel were dispatched to the area of the 500 block of W. Hurlbut in Belvidere. A man has been stabbed two times. No suspect information.
Update: This ended up being a standoff. Multiple ambulances on scene. Unknown if the standoff is with the suspect or victim.
