From the Beloit PD: Yesterday on 2nd shift officers responded out the area of the 1800 block of Dewey for a found property report. When officers got there they were informed that a child had located a loaded handgun in the back yard. The boy was with a friend, and while playing they discovered the gun laying in the yard. It is possible that it came from a suspect who had run from police on the previous day, but that aspect is still under investigation.
We would ask that you all talk to your kids and let them know that if they should happen to see a gun, a knife, a needle, anything suspicious in the yard, to leave it right where it is. We know that toy guns should have an orange tip, but sometimes these are removed from fake guns, and sometimes they are added to real guns by offenders who are trying to make their gun into something it isn’t. Either way, please tell your little ones to leave it be. More than anything we don’t want to see anyone get hurt. We also know that evidence that we may need from those guns can get contaminated once it is handled.
Thanks for having a conversation with your kids about this. We know that an accident with a gun would be terribly tragic.
